ABOUT THE ROUTE
Motorcycle in Mae Hong Son and you will admire a remote, mountainous province in northern Thailand, bordering Myanmar (Burma). Though sparsely populated, it’s ethnically diverse and home to hill tribes such as the Shan and Hmong.
The capital, also called Mae Hong Son, is a gateway to the region’s hills. It’s overlooked by Wat Phrathat Doi Kongmu, a Burmese-style monastery with 2 ornate white chedis (stupas) built in the 19th century. Mae Hong Son’s nickname is “the city of three mists” because it is often covered with mist. One hill tribe known as the Karen are a mix of closely related tribes. This group’s women are recognized by the large brass rings they wear around their necks.
The province is famous for its 1,864 road curves. Doi Inthanon is the highest mountain in Thailand and it is located in the south of the province. The small city of Pai became famous after a romantic Thai movie.
The roads in Mae Hong Sorn are mostly easy to ride. Some parts might be a bit harder than others but all our routes including this one can be completed by real bikers. You must be capable to handle a motorcycle over 250cc and do not use Motor Travel Inside routes as a form of learning how to ride it during the trip. We plan to ride around 150 and 280 kilometres per day which leaves plenty of time for relaxing, eating and sightseeing…
At arrival in Bangkok our team will pick you up at the airport for your transfer to the hotel. In the evening we have dinner together close to the hotel.
As we go we head into the Chinatown neighborhood to make your first temple stop of the day at Wat Traimit, often called the Temple of the Golden Buddha. Beneath the gilded roof of the eye-catching main temple, you’ll find the largest solid gold Buddha image in the world, a 5.5-ton sculpture whose origins have been lost to history.
From Wat Traimit, continue to the nearby Wat Pho, or Temple of the Reclining Buddha. Walk the full length of the 151-foot (46-meter) long Buddha image that’s the longest in Bangkok, or light an incense stick by the Buddha’s inlaid, mother-of-pearl feet.
Head to the banks of the Chao Phraya River to see the Grand Palace, whose elegant stepped roofs are considered the height of classical Thai architecture. You’ll be following in the footsteps of the Chakri Kings as you tour the sprawling site; still a working palace, most of the interior is closed to the public, but the manicured grounds and palace temple are fascinating to explore.
In the afternoon there will be time for relaxing. Maybe have a nice massage to loosen up those muscles for the coming up motorcycle tour?
After breakfast, we will pick you up to visit the floating market near Bangkok. In a small wooden boat, you will experience how the locals sell their products in this unique way. In the afternoon there is transportation by air to Chiang Mai.
We will have dinner in the city center. Our hotel will be on the south-side of town so there will be an easy getaway on our bikes the next day.
Finally, we get on our bikes. After breakfast and after check-in our motorcycles we are on our way to our first stop: Doi Inthanon. Beautiful viewpoints and a visit to The Great Relic Pagoda will be part of the program.
A curvy road will take us back on our way to Mae Sariang. Keth will take care of our lunch, totally Thai style. Back on road 108, we can make up some time on this beautiful road going through forests and rice fields.
You can visit the local market, just before breakfast. The locals are shopping for food here. The first part of our trip today will take you through forests and as we go along the road becomes more winding. A nice cup of coffee at a local cafe and of we go. Lunch is served halfway in Khun Yuam. A restaurant with a great view of the rice patties and great food.
We make a left turn just before we arrive in Mae Hong Son for a visit to Huay Pa King Long Neck village. After a short trip with a longboat and a visit to this extraordinary tribe, we will arrive in our beautiful hotel.
We just keep saying this: what a road!! Great pavement, twisty and beautiful panorama views on our way to Pai. A sort of hippy backpackers enclave where we will enjoy the afternoon, either with a visit to the town or just hanging out at the pool of our hotel.
The first part of today’s ride is a technical one. Taking it easy riding the curves. Our guide will take care of lunch. In Tha Ton you will visit the Wat Tha Ton on top of the mountains before heading to our hotel.
The first stop of this sightseeing day is Doing Mae Salong, where the Chinese mountain tea farmers live. The next stop is Doing Tung Royal Villa with its botanical gardens. Our stop for lunch.
Arriving at The Golden Triangle there is a short boat trip on the Mekong river which takes us to a short visit to Laos. The road then takes us back to Chiang Rai.
First stop of this last day back to Chiang Mai is the White Temple, Wat Rong Khun. Lunch is at one of the biggest lakes of Thailand, Kwan Phayao. We shouldn’t be too late in Chiang Mai to pay a visit to this beautiful old city in Northern Thailand.
After breakfast, there is a transfer to the airport. Where are on our way to Krabi. A nice beach hotel will be waiting for you. Day 11 and 12 will be one of relaxing at the beach or pool. Excursions (optional) can be made. Life is great!!
